Hyderabad Hues
Hyderabad is a city of myriad hues where the old and new cultures are harmoniously juxtaposed. It also has a fascinating history, with many attractions in and around the city. Lumbini gardens are a relatively new attraction in the current form, with the Buddha statue shimmering in the lake for a backdrop. However, my memory of it was not a very pleasant one. A while ago, my three year old and I were trying to jostle through a crowd walking towards the laser show, when my pocket was picked. The laser show showcases the colourful history and spirit of Hyderabad through generations. Post the show is when I realised that my pocked was picked.
Another experience in Hyderabad was when I tried my hand at the ten-kilometre run (“Hyderabad 10K Run”). The event kicked off on the magnificient Necklace Road in November 2006. I wasn’t sure that I would run the whole distance; the idea was to participate, run some distance before returning home. But the response to the event from the people from all walks of life was enough to kindle a spark in me to complete the distance around the lake. To cut a long story short, I ran most of it, walked a little (a kilometre) and completed it successfully.
During Ramzan, people irrespective of religion are on the look out in the Old City for places to get the yum haleem amongst other savouries. Every Hyderabadi has his/her own favourite kitchen for the dum biriyani and swears by it. Another gastronomic pilgrimage centre for me was Karachi bakery in Mozzamjahi market for its fruit biscuits. The historic monuments in and around Hyderabad still speak of a culture, very much alive in its people. Now why would anyone want anyone want to throw a stone in this peaceful city of diverse cultures.
Now faceless cowards have tried to shatter the peace with the recent bomb blasts. A strong secular fabric of the city binds Hyderabadis. This can’t be shattered by such heinous acts. However, the authorities can’t take this spirit for granted and need to be more proactive.
Come what may, let us hope the spirit of Hyderabad burns bright regardless of the forces of cowardice.
