Relationships - Friends

Friendships last a lifetime. The relationships made during school, college or early days of your career go a very long way. These guys and gals observe you closely and also are your first critics outside of home. Some of them guide you during troubled times. What do we do in ensuring such friendships or the new ones we make, last? Maintaining relationships is a big challenge. As each one grows in their career, cities, countries, timezones, excuses, etc separate them.

One would think in the virtual world it is easier to maintain relationships. It is relatively easy to make connections online and demonstrate large networks, but maintaining them? The truth does not come close to this. The fundamentals of maintaining relationships still remain the same, irrespective of the medium - making an attempt to keep in touch and empathizing with them or just being a sounding board. It also involves lot of little things that are important nonetheless. The sum of these little things goes a long way in establishing trust and bonding. True friends make keeping in touch periodically a rhythm despite the fact that their lives’ priorities keep shifting.

Is it done to make excuses in maintaining relationships by citing various reasons - work and family life?

Efforts need to flow from both ends. It is not necessary that people who try to maintain relationships are clingers. These people value every relationship and respect them too; hence they believe it is a part of their daily life. Their list of relationships could include a newspaper vendor, a fellow jogger, the local cable guy, etc.

Living in the same city, one still could have various reasons for not being able to meet face-to-face and sustain relationships. Causes could be various such as being bogged down by work or the needs have matured or one doesn’t feel intellectually stimulated anymore with the same set of people.

Friends can also help an individual grow while appreciating their personal space. Friends are folks are who are there for you in good times and bad times. Making an attempt to maintain relationships could also make the in-between times interesting.
